Why CapEQ

We are a small team, and it feels like one. Your work is visible, your judgement is trusted, and there is no thicket of hierarchy to work through. You would report straight to co-founder James Pugh and own the finance function outright.

We look after our people because we have found that a happy team does better work: fair pay, a share of the profits through our bonus scheme, and real time and budget for wellbeing.

We also genuinely enjoy each other's company. Recent get-togethers have taken us track-racing, to a cookery school, and out on volunteering days, and there is usually something else in the diary. If variety and real ownership appeal to you more than a fixed seat in a large finance department, you will fit in well here.

The role

You would run our day-to-day finances and month-end reporting, and be the person the leadership team turns to for commercial and financial advice. The deadlines are fixed, but how you fit the work around your week is largely yours to decide.

Financial operations
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns, including partial-exemption calculations.
  • Run payroll.
  • Process supplier payments, manage the purchase ledger, and resolve invoice queries.
  • Oversee credit control and client invoicing, making sure receivables are collected on time.
  • Produce monthly cashflow forecasts and monitor them against actuals.
  • Build our ability to automate the finance function as the firm grows.
Reporting and compliance
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including profit and loss, balance sheet, and variance commentary.
  • Liaise with external accountants on year-end accounts, tax filings, and audit requirements.
  • Manage compliance obligations, including making sure appropriate insurance cover is in place and renewals are handled proactively.

Governance and leadership
  • Produce and manage the monthly board pack, giving directors timely, accurate financial reporting.
  • Provide strategic and commercial financial advice to the senior leadership team.
  • Support business planning, budgeting, and financial modelling as required.
General administration
  • Take ownership of ad-hoc administrative and operational tasks as they arise, acting as a reliable point of contact for finance and business-administration queries across the firm.
  • Help maintain clear processes and tidy records, contributing to a well-run, organised office.

About you

Essential
  • A qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in a hands-on finance role, ideally as a finance manager, financial controller, or equivalent.
  • Strong working knowledge of VAT, including partial exemption.
  • Demonstrable experience producing management accounts and cashflow forecasts.
  • Comfortable working independently, managing a varied workload, and switching between strategic and operational tasks.
  • A high level of accuracy, reliability, and attention to detail.
Desirable
  • Experience providing strategic financial advice to founders.
  • Familiarity with board-pack preparation and governance reporting.
  • Experience managing relationships with external accountants.
  • A background in professional or financial services — helpful, not essential.
